Purpose of Spiritual Direction

In The Practice of Spiritual Direction, Barry and Connolly (p. 8) define spiritual direction as “help given by one Christian to another which enables that person to pay attention to God’s personal communication to him or her,

to respond to this personally communicating God

to grow in intimacy with this God,

and to live out the consequence of this relationship.”

Some other purposes of spiritual direction are to help individuals:

1. to notice God’s specific self-communication in life, relationships, and prayer and to respond interiorly and exteriorly to God’s self-revelation.

2. to grow in an affective relationship with God.

a. relating what happens on an affective level.

b. God desires to interact with us in our deeper affective attitudes, feelings, desires, core experiences of life, self and others.

3. to notice, savor, relive, enjoy and respond to the deep affective touches of God.

4. to recognize, explore, unpack areas of unfreedom, pulling back, holding back from God’s touch:

a. to surface feelings, attitudes, reasons for areas/ways we are not involved affectively with God, self, others, life.

b. to bring out into the light areas of darkness, unfreedom, struggle in order to: bring these into conscious dialogue with God; involve God more intimately and intricately in those areas; be freed from binding realities in order to be freed for greater self-giving and a fuller life.

5. to experience greater interior freedom, deeper joy, a fuller life, richer relationships with God, self, others.
